Wandering Around “Furarii-to”

Wandering Around “Furarii-to”

The local Asahikawa style is to walk around, stopping at multiple places for different takes on your particular item of choice.

The “izakaya” in the area have a long, beloved tradition of being by locals, for locals.

Upon entering my first pub, I found a menu of creative cuisines using in-season ingredients from Hokkaido, and the freshest seafood carefully selected from suppliers with whom the owner has cultivated long-lasting personal relationships. I, like the locals, really enjoyed being able to sit at the counter and converse with the owner. I felt right at home in the friendly atmosphere, so much so that I found myself wanting to say something like, “Hey, buddy! What should I get today?” Having come all the way to Asahikawa, part of the fun for me was to learn the best sake pairings for the daily specials. I was quickly swept away by the sounds of smooth jazz, and my conversation with the warmly-smiling owner became a souvenir I took home with me.

An Exciting Venue and Bounty of Local Sake Makes for a Fun Grill

The fun interior and a rich variety of local sake are what make this grill great
The aroma coming from across the counter is stimulating my appetite something fierce, but the anticipation isn’t killing me. I’m having the time of my life! I’m waiting for fresh, meticulously-selected seafood and meat to finish cooking on the charcoal grill. Also on the menu is the “daily pizza”, which makes liberal use of seasonal vegetables and is something of a labor of love for the owner. The veggies are so plentiful, I can’t even see the crust? Now I see why this place is popular with women, too.
The building’s layout is, in a word, singular. The loft area reminds me of a hidden hideout, while the passageway is a unique feature you don’t see in restaurants. The second-floor seating area reminds me of a child’s secret fort with its warm, soothing orange lighting. These are the experiences we travel for: to suddenly feel like you’re a kid again, eating a meal in his little hideaway! This last part is so good, I almost want to keep it a secret… You get a clear view of the grill from up on the second floor. Looking down on the flames cooking the next dish from directly above sounds like a special treat, don’t you think?

Enjoy the Scents and the Seasons While You Fill up On Obanzai!

After ascending a stairwell that’s likely remained unchanged for ages, a modernized Showa interior expands before me. I’m overcome by a wave of nostalgia upon entering, and it’s almost enough to make me say, “I’m back!” The solid wood table and matching chairs feel comfortable in more ways than one, too. The smell and taste of my obanzai dish soothes both my hunger and my heart with seasonal, locally-produced ingredients. The menu even contains tidbits of wisdom from the farmers and fishermen! These are dishes that can’t be found in cookbooks, they’re the product of traditional recipes that have been passed down over generations. Maybe you’d like a dinner set, with a little drink and a little something to eat? Or will you have trouble choosing, even from such a small menu? Either way, as you head out, don’t forget to tell everyone, “Be back later!”.
